MCH allays fears on malaria cases
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, JUNE 24. The incidence of malaria in the twin cities
is less compared to other metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and
Calcutta, the MCH Commissioner, Dr. P.K. Mohanty, has asserted.
The Commissioner said the incidence of malaria in the city last
year was only 0.036 per cent, as against 0.044 in Delhi, 0.160 in
Mumbai, 0.719 in Chennai and 1.270 in Calcutta. The number of
cases up to April this year was 309.
He told a press conference here on Friday that the corporation
would deploy 100 teams for taking up anti-larva operations after
the monsoon. Responding to press reports, Dr. Mohanty maintained
that unless 100 per cent sewerage coverage was done it would not
be possible to wipe out malaria.
Referring to the cases of gastroenteritis, he said the incidence
in 1999-2000 was 30 per cent less than the previous year. As
against 3,328 cases reported last year, there were only 2,077
cases in 1999-2000.
