India committed to signing CTBT after consensus: PM
India today utilised the first-ever summit with
the European Union to convey its reasons for acquiring nuclear
capability and reaffirmed its commitment to sign the
Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) once a political consensus
was achieved at home.

Advani sees 'anti-India' elements behind attacks
The Union Home Minister, Mr. L. K. Advani,

Losses for BJP in U.P.
The Bharatiya Janata Party appears to have
suffered heavy reverses in the Uttar Pradesh panchayat elections,
with its nominees having been rejected wholesale in several
districts. The final picture is not clear. However, reports from
districts suggest that the party received a drubbing in almost

Trinamool scores in Bengal civic polls
The Trinamool Congress-BJP combine appears to
be all set to form the Board in the Calcutta Corporation which
elected a hung body. The Trinamool and the communists were locked
in a close fight in the adjoining Salt Lake municipality where
each secured 11 out of the 23 wards.
Elian set to go home
The United States Supreme Court today refused to
hear the asylum case of Elian Gonzalez which means that the Cuban
lad is finally set to go home later in the day. The Court refused
any further extension of stay of Elian in this country.

The Centre has taken a major decision not to
implement the controversial Christian Marriage Bill 2000 in view
of criticism for the Bill from the Christian community.
Telecom stir evokes poor response
The one-day, nation-wide token strike by the
telecom employees today failed to produce much of an impact with
a large number of employees unions and associations backing out
at the last minute in response to an appeal from the
Communications Minister on Tuesday.
LTTE rejects truce offer
The LTTE has rejected the Sri Lankan
Government's offer for ceasefire to be followed by peace talks,
saying the cessation of hostilities would occur only if the
30,000 troops were withdrawn from northern Jaffna peninsula,
official sources here said today.
End violence against Christians: Pope
Pope John Paul II today called on India
and Indonesia to put an end to violence against Christian
minorities in the two countries.
