Elian set to go home
By Sridhar Krishnaswami
OTTAWA, JUNE 28. The United States Supreme Court today refused to
hear the asylum case of Elian Gonzalez which means that the Cuban
lad is finally set to go home later in the day. The Court refused
any further extension of stay of Elian in this country.
The Supreme Court's decision brings to an end a seven-month drama
ever since Elian was rescued in a shipwreck on Thanksgiving Day
last year in which his mother died.
Last week the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta
unanimously rejected the asylum case and basically held the view
that unless the Supreme Court issued an injunction, Elian and his
father, Mr. Juan Miguel Gonzalez, would be free to leave the U.S.
after 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Clinton administration, which has all along maintained that
Elian belonged to his father, is said to be relieved at the Court
decision.
