One more woman dies after tubectomy in Karimnagar dt.
By Our Staff Reporter
KARIMNAGAR, JUNE 28. Even as the district administration had
informed the Chief Minister, Mr N Chandrababu Naidu, on Tuesday
evening during the video conference that only four persons had
died due to post-operative complications after performing one
lakh sterilisations within two years, another death was reported
from Jammikunta mandal headquarters on Wednesday morning
allegedly after tubectomy.
Mrs Ch Rama (28) working as a nurse in a private nursing home had
undergone sterilisation responding to the district
administration's call on May 24, 2000, at the Government hospital
in the mandal. She had two children. Ever since she underwent
operation, she developed some complications and was suffering
from pain. As she was working in the medical profession, she took
medicines on her own.
However, on Wednesday the pain intensified and she fainted and
when the family members took her to the Government hospital the
doctors confirmed her death. After getting information, several
local leaders, women's leaders numbering about 300 assembled in
front of the hospital and raised protests alleging the negligence
of doctors for her death. They alleged that during the
sterilisation operation on Mrs Rama the power supply went off
twice and the doctors had performed the sterilisation by taking a
break. The people complained that it was due to the negligence of
doctors that the woman had died after tubectomy.
When the situation went out of control, the Jammikunta SI, Mr N
Sanjeeva Rao, deployed additional police forces at the hospital
and tried to pacify the agitators, but in vain. Immediately, the
Karimnagar Revenue Divisional Officer, Mr Shankar Chauhan, and
the DMHO, Mr Shankar Alankar, rushed to the spot. As soon as the
officials visited the hospital, the agitators gheraoed them and
demanded an ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh and house site pattas for the
children. A case was registered with the Jammikunta police
station under CrPC section 174 (suspicious death). It may be
recalled that two months ago a woman had died after undergoing
sterilisation at the same Government hospital.
The Joint Collector, Mr Sabyasachi Ghosh, said that the post-
mortem report was awaited to establish whether the death was
caused due to post-operative complications after sterilisation or
other disease. ``Subject to the establishment of death due to
tubectomy, they would provide an ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh and house
site pattas to the children of the deceased woman'', he said.
