Jayasuriya, Atapattu win opening skirmish
KANDY, JUNE 28. Sanath Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu shared an
unbroken 140-run first wicket partnership as Sri Lanka won the
opening skirmish of the third and final Test against Pakistan on
Wednesday.
Jayasuriya, who chose to bat first after winning his third
consecutive toss of the series, was unbeaten on 82 and Atapattu
50 at close after play was delayed until after lunch because of
heavy overnight rain.
The Sri Lanka captain became only the third player from his
country to pass 3,000 runs in Tests when he had made 19. Aravinda
de Silva (5,685) and Arjuna Ranatunga (4,902) are the only other
Sri Lankan players to have scored more Test runs than Jayasuriya
who is playing his 50th Test.
