Rotary award
THE ROTARY Club of North Madras felicitated violinist
Kanyakumari, by conferring on her the ``For The Sake of Honour''
Award for this year. The vice-president of the club, Sukumar,
spoke about Kanyakumari's career spanning several decades. Her
inborn talent was first recognised by Ivaturi Vijayeswara Rao
when she was still a child. She imbibed from him the techniques
evolved by the unforgettable violin maestro of yesteryear -
Dwaram Venkataswami Naidu and later on from Chandrasekharan.
Another vice-president of the club and noted sitar artiste, Pt.
Janardan introduced the chief guest, N. Pattabhiraman, editor of
Shruti magazine. Pattabhiraman referred to the renowned women of
Carnatic music - M. S. Subbulakshmi, D. K. Pattammal and M. L.
Vasanthakumari - who overcame the rigid gender bias of male
musicians in their careers through their patience, perseverance
and vidwat. He looked upon Kanyakumari as one such worthy artiste
who had succeeded in establishing herself in the still male-
dominated music world. He handed her a silver plaque and citation
on behalf of the club.
