Govt. asks CBI to give update on match-fixing probe

NEW DELHI, June 30. The Government has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to give it an update within 10 days on the progress made in the investigations in connection with the cricket match-fixing scandal.

"We are determined to go to the root of the problem," Union Sports Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa told newspersons here today, adding that there was no need for being cynical that nothing would emerge out of the investigations.

"We (Government) have made our stand clear and we are on the right path," the Minister said. He said that his advice to players like Azharuddin and Kapil Dev to stay out of team till their names were cleared was purely personal.

Dhindsa said the new sports policy would see to it that such things like match-fixing or betting scandals did not take place in future. "We are evolving a policy which will have the maximum support from the all concerned quarters," he added.

Minister of State for Sports Shahnawaz Hussein was more forthcoming. He was of the view that the CBI investigation was more comprehensive. "We (CBI) have done much more than the King Commission in South Africa. The only difference is that CBI's proceedings have to be in camera whereas King Commission's is an open inquiry," he said.
