Deepan Chakravarthy wins title

KOCHI, JUNE 30. For a youngster who came here just to improve his FIDE rating, the Cusat Open all-India chess tournament turned out to a pleasant surprise. Tamil Nadu's J. Deepan Chakravarthy, who celebrated his 13th birthday a couple of weeks ago, won the title on Friday, outwitting many seasoned stars.

``It's truly a dream come true,'' said the llth-seeded Chakravarthy, a ninth standard student of Dolphin Matriculation School. The Madurai lad had won the silver medal in the Commonwealth under-14 event last year and the gold at the National rapid chess championship in the same age-group but Cusat gave him his first major prize in the senior circuit.

The unbeaten Chakravarthy (8.5 points from 10 rounds) got the draw he needed in the last round on Friday to take the Cyber Enterprises Trophy and the cash prize of Rs 5,000.

Maharashtra's 15-year-old Konakanchi Ninad Ravi, who pulled off some big upsets before surrendering the lead to Chakravarthy, finished runner-up with eight points while Tamil Nadu's S. Poobesh Anand and Karnataka's M.S. Thej Kumar finished third and fourth respectively.
