Ramesh scores facile win

ANDORRA, JUNE 30. India's R.B. Ramesh scored a facile victory over fellow International Master and highly rated Dimitri Tyomkin of Israel while V.Saravanan tasted another defeat in the 6th round of the Andorra Open international chess tournament here on Friday.

In a battle between the top two seeds, GM Lev Psakhis scored an impressive technical victory over GM Alexey Kuzmin with black pieces to continue to lead the table jointly with GM Marin with 5.5 points.

Ramesh adopted the Kings Indian defence against Tyomkin, who showed his aggressive intentions by pushing his `G' pawn forward early, from a system with `H3' and `Bg5'.

Ramesh developed an attack on white's king along the diagonal of the dark coloured bishop, but misplayed to land in an equal looking ending. However, Ramesh exploited the strength of his passed pawn on `E4' and brought out his king to a centralised square.

In a technical rook ending, Ramesh played his rook energetically to win most of Tyomkin's pawns and won convincingly in 66 moves. Ramesh moves on to 4.5 points.

Sarvanan faced the solid International Master from Romania, ion Cosma with black pieces, and adopted the Pirc defence.

In a classical setup, Cosma played aggressively by temporarily sacrificing his knight on `F7' square and exploiting the possession of the `D' file. Saravanan gave up an exchange to create counterplay and appeared to generate a lot of play with his knights, due to the closed nature of the position.

However, he came under severe time pressure when he had to complete 15 moves in just 5 minutes in his clock. He misplayed a promising position and lost the game in 39 moves. Saravanan stays at 4 points.

Vedant Goswami adopted the Archangelsk variation of the Ruy lopez with black pieces against the unrated Masip Tressera of Spain and got an advantage from the opening. He played aggressively by pushing `G5' in the middlegame and ripped white's kingside open.

He piled his pieces on the Kingside and won the opponent's queen and the game in 38 moves. Vedant moves on to 3.5 points.

Important results: (6th round): IM Cosma (5) beat IM Saravanan, (4) IM Tyomkin (3.5) lost to IM Ramesh (4.5), Masip Tressera (3) lost to Goswami (3.5), GM Kuzmin (4.5) lost to GM Psakhis (5.5), IM Cicak (4) lost to GM Marin (5.5), Granero Roco (4.5) drew IM Georgiev (4.5), IM Ivanov (4.5) drew GM Hamdouchi (4.5), GM Lalic (4) drew IM Velicka (4), GM Al Modiahki (4.5) beat IM Manuel Perez (3.5).
