Musharraf rules out treason case
ISLAMABAD, JULY 1. Pakistan's military ruler Gen. Pervez
Musharraf today ruled out institution of a treason case against
the former Premier, Mr. Nawaz Sharif, for his statement on the
Kargil conflict saying it may expose many national secrets.
``Mr. Sharif will not be tried on sedition charges for his
statement on Kargil. If the matter is taken to the court many
national secrets will be exposed,'' Gen. Musharraf told reporters
in Oathal in Baluchistan.
``It is surprising how Sharif and Kulsoom Nawaz talk about this
issue. I will neither respond to these statements nor will we
institute any case against them as it will affect national
security,'' he said.
Mr. Sharif, in a speech in Attock accountability court last
month, had said he was kept in dark about the Kargil operation.
He further alleged the operation was masterminded by the then
Army Chief Gen. Musharraf. He had also demanded constitution of a
high-powered commission to probe into the episode.
