U.S. asks India, Pak. to ease tensions

WASHINGTON, JULY 1. The U.S. has urged India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and try to ease tensions between them and ``we will continue to work on that,'' the State Department spokesperson, Mr. Richard Boucher, said when asked to comment on media reports that Pakistan was ready to start another Kargil- type conflict with India.

However, he did not comment on reports that Senator, Mr. Sam Brownback, wanted all sanctions against India to be lifted before the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, arrived in Washington.

He also refused to comment on the letter written by some members of the Congress to the House Speaker that Mr. Vajpayee be invited to address the Congress.
