Normal water supply to be restored by July 4
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, JULY 1. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and
Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) on Saturday assured to restore the entire
supply of 60 Million Gallons per Day (MGD) from the Manjeera to
the twin cities by July 4.
The water supplies were disrupted on Friday after flood water
submerged the water treatment plants, pump houses and electrical
sub-station of Manjeera Water Supply Scheme (MWSS) Phase-III and
Phase-IV systems at Peddapur.
Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, HMWSSB Managing
Director, Mr.L.V.Subramanyam said that pumping units from twin
cities as well as Sangareddy district that were rushed to the
spot had completed the dewatering process. Efforts were on to
make at least two motors each of Phase-III and Phase-IV
operational by Sunday evening and immediately ensure a supply of
around 30 MGD of water for twin cities, he said.
Meanwhile, additional water was being drawn, around 12 MGD from
Osmansagar and 5 MGD from Himayatnagar, to maintain a minimum of
90 MGD out of the regular supply of 128 MGD, he said. Additional
tankers were also pressed into service to supply water in the
twin cities, he said adding that priority was being given to
providing emergency services such as hospitals.
Mr. Subramanyam said that about ten upstream tanks were breached
on Friday submerging the water treatment plants, pump houses and
electrical sub-station at Peddapur. The water broke the compound
wall and gushed into the sub-station without offering a
possibility of diverting it, he said.
Help was also rushed from various quarters including Singareni
Colleries, AP Transco and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited in
flushing out the water and drying up the area, he said. Since
water reservoirs were completely polluted with flood waters,
supplies would be started after disinfecting them with chlorine,
Mr.Subramanyam said.
On steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future, the
HMWSSB Managing Director promised to acquire about 27 acres of
land around Peddapur sub-station for building the flood banks.
