NC to pull out of NDA?
By Shujaat Bukhari
SRINAGAR, JULY 4. With the ruling National Conference in Jammu
and Kashmir left in the lurch by the Union Cabinet's rejection of
the autonomy resolution passed by the State Assembly, the defiant
mood indicates the party may pull out of the National Democratic
Alliance. The NC leaders described the decision as unfortunate.
Stating that the decision to reject the resolution had exposed
the BJP-led Central Government, the State Public Works Minister,
Mr. Ali Mohammad Sagar, said ``it is something we had demanded
within the ambit of Constitution.''
The CPI(M) State unit secretary and MLA, Mr. Mohammed Yousuf
Tarigami, said it would lead to a confrontation between the NC
and the NDA. The People's Democratic Party leader, Ms. Mehbooba
Mufti, said she was not surprised as it was the outcome of a
drama played out by the BJP and the NC.
Late in the evening, informed sources told The Hindu that the
mood in the NC indicated a plan to pull out from the NDA. Though
a final decision would be taken by the working committee in a
couple of days, party leaders felt there was no choice but to
snap ties with the NDA.
