CBI probe into woman advocate's suicide sought

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JULY 4. Representatives of 11 women's organisations supported by some advocates staged a dharna for a short while before the A.P. High Court demanding a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the case of the suicide of Sangeeta Sarma.

After shouting slogans outside the gates of the High Court complex for some time, women walked around and inside the complex holding placards demanding justice. They also distributed pamphlets to the people on the premises of the High Court before they were stopped by the police who told them not to tarnish the sanctity of the court. The agitators also went to the chambers of the Chief Justice, Justice M.S. Liberhan, and submitted a memorandum to him.

The women then proceeded to the office of the Director-General of Police, Mr. H.J. Dora, and submitted a memorandum to him.

Those who spearheaded the agitation included Ms. Ratnamala of A.P. Civil Liberties Committee, Ms. A. Sunitha of Human Rights Forum, Ms. Shanthi of Ankuram, Ms. Satyavathi, Editor, Bhoomika Publication, Ms. Pasya Padma, Ms. Prem Pavani and Ms. Sakunthala of Mahila Samakhya, the women's wing of the Communist Party of India, Ms. Sandhya of Progressive Organisation for Women, Ms. Sujatha of Sadhana and Ms. Usha of Campaign for Housing and Tenurial Rights.

Later, another delegation went to the Secretariat to meet the Chief Secretary, Mr. P.V. Rao. However, when they were told that he was busy in a meeting with the Chief Minister, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu, and that he would be able to see them only in the evening, they handed over a memorandum to be submitted to him.

Other demands of the agitators included focus on police investigation into the points Sangeeta had mentioned in her suicide note and suspension from the Bar Council of the lawyers whom she had named responsible for harassing her.
