Decision on national water policy deferred
The fourth meeting of the National Water
Resources Council began badly for the Centre today as it failed
to secure the approval of its proposed National Water Policy. So
much so, the new guidelines for allocation of river water among
the States could not even be discussed.
All set for U.S. missile-defence test
The defence department said all systems were
ready today for the crucial $ 100 million third test of a planned
United States National Missile Defence (NMD) system that is
bitterly opposed by Russia and China.
Finance panel submits report to President
The much-awaited report of the 11th Finance
Commission was submitted to the President, Mr. K. R. Narayanan,
today by the Commission Chairman, Prof. A. M. Khusro. The report
will determine the sharing of resources between the Centre and
the States for the five years, beginning this year.
It's time to rectify mistake: RSS chief
The RSS chief, Mr. K.S. Sudarshan, has asked
the Government to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution which
gives a special status to Jammu & Kashmir and impose President's
rule in the State.
One more tiger dies
Even as another white tiger fell victim to
the parasitic infection in the Nandankanan Zoological Park, near
here, this morning taking the total number of deaths to 12, the
forest officials in-charge of the zoo maintained that they had no
knowledge about any lapse on the part of the zoo doctors or
authorities that led to the death of so many big cats in such a
short span of time.
50 peacocks die
The death of 50 peacocks in the last few days in
village Maharajpura and nearby areas in the district, allegedly
due to consumption of bajra, has sparked indignation and concern
among bird lovers.
Governors' meet called
The President, Mr. K.R. Narayanan, has called
a two-day conference of Governors and Lieutenant Governors next
week. The last such conference had taken place in December 1995
when Dr. Shanker Dayal Sharma was the President. Since the
Governors themselves do not have a forum to exchange views, the
conference acquires considerable constitutional importance.
Manmohan not in Cong.(I) review panel
After weeks of procrastination, the Congress(I)
president, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, today set up a 44-member ``economic
group'' under the chairmanship of the former Finance Minister,
Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, to form an overview of the current economic
policies and suggest ``areas where a course correction was
necessary''.
Left counters BJP attack
In a new twist to the Left-BJP row over Dr.
Shyama Prasad Mookherjee's birth centenary function in Calcutta
on Thursday, the CPI(M) today questioned the use of ``official
resources'' for what, it said, was essentially a party affair.
