Tuskers remain cool to people
By Our Staff Correspondent
TUMKUR, JULY 9. People living in the outskirts of Tumkur city
enjoyed watching three tuskers today, which had reportedly
strayed away from Savandurga forests, even as the Police and
Forest Department officials struggled to return them to the
forests.
It was said the elephants were first spotted on Saturday morning
at Nerlapura. They were eating tender plantains in a garden,
where a number of acrea trees were found destroyed.
The Kyatsandra police inspector, Mr. Sridhar, and the PSI, Mr.
Pampapathi, along with a group of Forest Department officials
successfully drove the elephants towards Jellamaranahalli hills
range in Magadi taluk.
However, they were forced to stop the "chase" at Maskal later in
the afternoon, due to heavy rain. Today, a boy in Baddihalli
noticed the animals in the early hours. It is suspected that the
animals returned at night.
The boy, Suresh, said he was startled when a big lump of mud
suddenly fell on his head. When he turned he saw one of the
tuskers trying to take its leg out of slush. The elephants then
marched towards K.Palasandra.
A huge range of gardens surrounding Palasandra provided the
animals enough scope to hide. Unlike two other tuskers, which had
invaded the area two years ago and killed a person, the present
herd has remained cool to crowds of people.
