Waqar Younis suspended for ball-tampering

Colombo, July 9. (Reuters): Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis was suspended for one game and fined 50 percent of his match fee today for ball-tampering in the limited overs tournament also involving Sri Lanka and South Africa.

Cricket officials said Waqar was omitted from the Pakistan side playing Sri Lanka in the fourth match on Sunday after tournament referee John Reid's decision to punish him.

New Zealander Reid considered the incident to be serious after it was seen on television during Pakistan's match yesterday against South Africa, who won by 18 runs.

Pakistan pace bowler Azhar Mahmood was fined 30 percent of his match fee on the same charge, while captain Moin Khan was severely reprimanded for not controlling his bowlers.

Cricket officials said Waqar had already been warned against ball-tampering during the third and final test against Sri Lanka in Kandy, which ended in a draw, earlier this month.
