Chords & Notes

DIL KAHIN (Hosh Kahin Universal, Rs. 60)

As the title suggests, the songs seem to wander nowhere although it boasts of bigwigs such as Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Jagjit Singh and so on. The songs stand out for their variety of classical-based tunes.

Aadesh Srivastav should either stick to the filmy music or ghazals but the fusion experimented here does not bring out any genre. Jab Samne Tum Aa Jate Ho by Asha Bhonsle and Jagjit Singh is hummable but is a disappointment for the fans of Jagjit Singh who is heard only in the interlude. Nida Fazli's lyrics are ordinary.

Chandni Ka Challa, a group song based on folk music, is foot- tapping, and Alka Yagnik's Kya Tera Kya Mera Hai deserves a mention. Dil Mandir Bhi Hai Masjid Bhi has a good blend of instruments.

Kahin Kahin Se Har Chehra with Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle and Jagjit Singh, is notable for its sarod interludes. Asha Bhonsle's Jo Huwa Woh Huwa Kis Liye sounds like a mujra and Kya Batayen Mohabbat Kya Hai has Sabri Brothers singing in a qawwali style.

Dhadkan(Venus, Rs. 55)

"Never break a heart" is the catchline of Dharmesh Darshan's yet to be released film, Dhadkan. Produced by Venus Records and Tapes Ltd. and starring Akshay Kumar, Shilpa Shetty, Sunil Shetty and Mahima Chowdhary, the director in this venture hopes to recreate the magic of Raja Hindustani.

Dil Ne Ye Kaha Hai Dil Se, a soft number with excellent lyrics, is the highlight of the album. Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik and Kumar Sanu have given their best for this number. Alka Yagnik has sung the same song with Sonu Nigam. The other notable track is Tum Dil Ki Dhadkan Mein. The musical rhythm of this song is a typical work of Nadeem-Shravan.

Dulhe Ke Sehra, sung by the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, is scintillating. Na Na Karte Pyar and Aksar Is Duniya Mein fail to impress.

Kabhie To Nazar Milao (Magnasound, Rs. 55)

The diva of playback singing, Asha Bhonsle, has teamed up with Adnan Sami for this collection of love songs. The title track is the pick of the lot with the duo presenting a good synchronisation of voice. The sequel solo by Asha Bhonsle is equally appreciable.

Pyar Bina and Barsaat are the other two romantic numbers that are tuneful. Barsaat is a solo by Adnan Sami, who has an expressive voice. Sami, who has composed music for this album, has missed the mark somewhere down the line. He fails to retain the romantic mood of the first two songs.

Mehndi Masala and Lift Karaday in a way disturb the mood. Dholki is not so catchy and the album does not succeed in stringing the essence of the songs.

Tere Liye (Aditya Sounds, Rs. 50)

This is an album of the youths and by the youths. The director has not only used the youths in the starcast, but even the singers and composers are youngsters.

Halka Halka Paani is a foot-tapping racy number with catchy lyrics. This song has been sung by Sonu Nigam and Jaspinder Narula.

Sonu Nigam has rendered seven of the nine songs in the album. He has added light tone to his voice range making it sound more youthful. Any keen listener will notice the versatility of his voice.

He changes his tone and has successfully adapted his voice to different moods.

Suno Piya does not involve unnecessary background instruments.

Kavitha Krishnamurthy and Sonu Nigam have beautifully matched the chords of the guitar.

Tanha Hoon Yaaron by Hariharan is appealing. Tere Liye is a sad number rendered by KK and Sonu Nigam.

Chikna Ajnabi, Jee Lenge and Dil Dhapaak are passable. They are not so catchy, but one can feel the enthusiasm in all the numbers.

Over all, it is a good effort by music directors, Jeet-Pritam, who have made a mark.
