Thackeray arrested, freed by court
The Mumbai police today arrested the Shiv Sena
chief, Mr. Bal Thackeray, after he dramatically put himself in
the hands of the law today ``to end the tension of uncertainty''.
He told the police he would meet them in the court even before
the chargesheet was readied. The police then asked him to come to
the Mayor's official bungalow to avoid the throng of the Sena
cadre and formally arrested him.
I feel vindicated: Jethmalani
The former Union Law Minister, Mr. Ram
Jethmalani, today said he felt vindicated with a Mumbai court
dismissing the case against the Shiv Sena supremo, Mr. Bal
Thackeray, as time- barred, a view which he had maintained all
along.

The dismissal of the case against the Shiv
Sena leader, Mr. Bal Thackeray, by a Mumbai court this morning
led to noisy scenes in both Houses of Parliament with the Rajya
Sabha being adjourned for the day shortly after the lunch break
following clashes between the Congress(I) and Shiv Sena members.

Missionary shot dead
A Catholic priest was killed and three other
missionaries were injured when a group of unidentified militants
opened fire on them at Balucherra in north Tripura district
today, the SP (Operations), Mr. Dhurjati Gautam, said here.
Talks collapsed over Jerusalem
After 15 days of talks, the Camp David
process has collapsed. Both the Israeli Prime Minister, Mr. Ehud
Barak, and the Palestinian leader, Mr. Yasser Arafat, were
scheduled to leave the United States later on Tuesday. The U.S.
President, Mr.Bill Clinton, announcing the breakdown, said that
even though there was significant progress the two sides were not
able to reach an agreement ``this time''.
