Taiwanese Vice-PM quits
TAIPEI: The Taiwanese Prime Minister, Mr. Tang Fei, on Tuesday
accepted the resignation of his deputy over a deadly delay in
rescue efforts to save four workers swept away by a flash flood.
Two bodies have been found and two others were missing and feared
drowned in the raging Pachang river in southern Taiwan's Chiayi
county. The Vice-Premier, Mr. Yu Shyi-Kun (in picture), who was
concurrently head of the Government's disaster prevention and
rescue committee, tendered his resignation late on Monday to take
responsibility for the bungled rescue attempt. The four were
swept away on Saturday after waiting almost three hours for help
while the military and police argued over who should respond to
the distress call.
