Sayantan, Saptarshi and Bhuiyan share top spot

CALCUTTA, JULY 25. The overnight leader and sixth-seed, Yashpal Singh Sonwani of Madhya Pradesh blundered in a drawn position before losing against fifth seeded Sayantan Dutta of Bengal in the top board of the sixth round of XIII The Telegraph schools' chess tournament at the Gorky Sadan here on Tuesday.

This paved the way for defending champion and top Saptarshi Roy of Bengal along with Sayantan Dutta and ninth placed Gulam Mustafa Bhuiyan of Bangladesh regain the top spot with 5.5 points each. All the three won their respective boards today.

Roy beat Yambem Dhanbir Singh of Assam in 27 moves while unseeded Nilabh Upadhyay of Bengal held second seeded Deep Sengupta of Bihar to a draw. Sengupta playing his second successive draw today fell to the second spot.

Another rated player, seventh ranked Rohan Vijay Shandilya of Bihar, agreed to a draw after 26 moves against Tanmoy Pattanayak of Bengal. Same was the fate of 10th placed Somak Palit who drew against former national under-10 champion Rahul Sangma of Bihar.
