Kargil heroes remembered
The Lok Sabha today paid rich tributes and
recalled the sacrifices made by the soldiers during the Kargil
conflict on its first anniversary today and reaffirmed the
nation's commitment to the welfare of the families of the martyrs
and the injured armymen.
Attack on Christians rocks RS
Attacks on Christians in various parts of the
country triggered heated exchanges between the Treasury Benches
and Opposition members in the Rajya Sabha, leading to two
adjournments in the pre-lunch session.
DF Govt. should go: Opposition
Opposition parties in Maharashtra, mainly the
Shiv Sena and BJP, were vociferous in their demand for the
resignation of the Democratic Front Government because of the
``setback'' it received on Tuesday when the case against the Shiv
Sena chief, Mr. Bal Thackeray, - for inflammatory writings in
1992-93 stoking communal riots - was thrown out by a city court.
Jethmalani insists on making statement today
The former Union Law Minister, Mr. Ram
Jethmalani, today said he would insist that the Rajya Sabha
Chairman, Mr. Krishan Kant, allow him to make an ``amended''
statement - about the events leading to his resignation from the
Union Cabinet - tomorrow; in case the Chairman's permission was
not forthcoming, he would ``withdraw'' his statement and release
it outside the House.
Curbs hinder ties with U.S.: Brajesh Mishra
Although India is not ``pleading'' for the
lifting of sanctions, the punitive measures now in place are an
impediment to the realisation of the full potential of Indo-U.S.
relations, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister and
National Security Adviser, Mr. Brajesh Mishra, has said.
Attempt to enforce dress code in university
The self-styled ``protectors'' of Indian culture
are at it again. Some student leaders of the Maharaja Sayajirao
University, Baroda, claiming to be members of the Akhil Bharatiya
Vidyarthi Parishad but disowned by the organisation, recently
held a ``striptease show'' on the university campus to enforce a
``dress code'' for the girl students.
Speight arrested
The Fijian coup leader, Mr. George Speight, has
been arrested by the military, reports from Suva said today. His
media adviser, Mr. Jo Nata, and a legal aide, Mr. Tevita Bukarau,
were taken into custody.
UNP distancing itself from reforms?
After reaching an agreement with the Sri Lankan
Government on many of the key provisions in the proposed new
Constitution, the Opposition United National Party (UNP) is now
seeking to distance itself from the document.
Ban on Govt. staff employing children
The Centre has imposed a ban on employing
children below 14 years as domestic servants by all Government
employees in the All India Services.
