Kargil heroes remembered


NEW DELHI, JULY 26. The Lok Sabha today paid rich tributes and recalled the sacrifices made by the soldiers during the Kargil conflict on its first anniversary today and reaffirmed the nation's commitment to the welfare of the families of the martyrs and the injured armymen. The Lok Sabha Speaker, Mr. G.M.C. Balayogi, who made a reference to the Kargil anniversary in the House, said the country would beat back any aggression and reminded of the nation's commitment to peace and maintenance of good relations with its neighbours.

In the Rajya Sabha, the Chairman, Mr. Krishan Kant, recalled the sacrifices made by the soldiers and airmen to protect the territorial integrity of the country.

Vigilance stepped up

A year after Pakistan's intrusion into Indian territory, army troops have set up high-power imported surveillance system, increased and upgraded posts and road network and constructed mule tracks along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kargil sector, the chief of the military operations, Northern Command Headquarters, Maj. Gen. P.P.S. Bindra said. In Calcutta, a solemn ceremony was held at the Eastern Command Headquarters to mark the occasion.
