Speight arrested
By Amit Baruah
BANGKOK, JULY 26. The Fijian coup leader, Mr. George Speight, has
been arrested by the military, reports from Suva said today. His
media adviser, Mr. Jo Nata, and a legal aide, Mr. Tevita Bukarau,
were taken into custody.
Mr. Speight and his associates were arrested for carrying guns,
which was not covered by the amnesty decree. The decree was part
of the accord which led to the release of the Prime Minister, Mr.
Mahendra Chaudhury, and others.
The reports said the Fijian military spokesman, Lt. Col. Filipo
Tarakinikini, confirmed the arrests. He implied the arrests could
be linked to the threats on the life of the President, Ratu
Josefo Ilolio.
