Chandrika arrives in London
By Thomas Abraham
LONDON, JULY 26. The Sri Lankan President, Ms. Chandrika
Kumaratunge, arrived here on a private visit, to consult doctors
who treated her for eye damage, after an LTTE assassination
attempt last year. The presence of the LTTE's main spokesperson,
Dr. Anton Balasingham, in London, has sparked speculation that
the two might meet.
Diplomats here described her visit as purely private, and said
they knew of no plans for any such meeting. The British
Government too was told that the President was on a private visit
and that she would not be meeting any British Ministers. Ms.
Kumaratunge was here in April for medical consultations.
The Sri Lankan Foreign Minister, Mr. Lakshman Kadirigamar, who is
also in London, would be meeting the Foreign Office Minister
(South Asia), Mr. Peter Hain, on Thursday. This would be the
first meeting between the two Ministers.
