U.S. body invites mathematician to ULCA meet

BELGAUM, JULY 26. Mr. Tamraparni Venkatesh of Belgaum is among
the few mathematicians from India who have been invited to
"Mathematical Challenges of the 21st Century" meeting to be held
at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), from August
7 to 12. The meeting is a major event of World Mathematical Year
2000, held under the banner of American Mathematical Society
(AMS), founded in 1888.
The meet, "a landmark event featuring world's top mathematicians
promises to be a meeting of historical significance," says
Notices, a monthly published by AMS. It will have a stellar line-
up of 31 speakers, representing the depth and range of modern
mathematics. The meet will bring to life its current and future
impact on sciences and practical affairs of the world -- from
commerce to communications to medicine.
Among the Indians, including those working in universities
outside the country, who will be presenting papers are: Prof.
T.Venkatesh (Karnataka University), Prof. Ponnammal Natarajan and
Prof.Anbarasu Sivalingam (both from Anna University),
Prof.Dayanand Parashar (University of Delhi), Prof. Venkateswaran
Murali (Rhodes University), Prof. Hira H.Koul (Michigan State
University) and Prof. Rajagopalan Meenakshisundaram (Tennessee
State University), Prof. S.R.S.Varadhan (Courant Institute, New
York University).
For, Prof.T.Venkatesh, the only one from Karnataka to participate
in the meet, it will be a maiden visit to states. He is an AMS
member and is participating in the meet on invitation. He will
also be attending a ten-day workshop at the Mathematical Sciences
Research Institute (MSRI), Berkeley, California and a conference
in the Department of mathematics, University of California,
Berkeley.
