Country proud of sacrifices made by soldiers: Governor

BANGALORE, JULY 26. The Governor, Ms. V.S.Rama Devi, today said that the country was proud of the members of the armed forces who laid down their lives in the Kargil conflict.

Participating in the "Kargil Divas" celebrations at the Raj Bhavan, she hailed the officers and soldiers for the sacrifice they made to reclaim Kargil from the infiltrators. Regretting that the country lost their services, she said that the Government and the people should look after their family members. Though the "Kargil Diwas" was an occasion for celebration, "we do want more of peace and no war or war-like situation", she added.

The former Chief Minister Mr. M.Veerappa Moily, the Assembly Speaker, Mr. M.V.Venkatappa, the leaders of the Opposition in the Assembly and Council, Mr. Jagadish Shettar and Mr. K.H.Srinivasa, respectively, and Mr. Haranahalli Ramaswamy, Chairman, State Administrative Reforms Commission, the Minister, Mr. Mallikarjuna Kharge, Mr. Dharam Singh, Mr. Kagodu Thimmappa, Mr. H.K.Patil, Mr. D.B.Chandre Gowda, Dr. Maalakaraddy, Mr. Allam Veerabhadrappa, Ms. Rani Satish and Ms.Nafees Fazal, and senior officers were present.

Tributes were paid to the soldiers who were killed in action on behalf of the Government and the armed forces. The Governor laid a wreath in a ceremonial function at the memorial.

The Home Minister, Mr. Mallikarjuna Kharge, placed a wreath on behalf of the Chief Minister. Air Marshal J.S.Rai, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, HQ Training command, IAF, Brigadier Ranjit Singh, Commandant, MEG and Centre and Officiating Commander of HQ, Karnataka, Kerala and Goa Sub area, and Commodore P.L.Masson also placed wreaths. Wives of the slain soldiers also paid their tributes.

At the ASC Centre and College, Lt.Gen. I.K.Chhitwal led the senior army officers in paying tributes to those killed in action.
