Alleged medicine racket at medical college
By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 26. The Kerala Hospital Community
Pharmacy Employees' Association has called for a probe by
Vigilance or the Crime Branch into the alleged medicine racket
centred around the prescription and purchase of costly drugs for
surgery patients at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.
The Association feared that the inquiry by the local police or
hospital authorities would not be able to bring out the truth as
some big sharks were also involved. Representatives of the
Association also met the Health Minister, Mr. V.C. Kabeer, to
press the demand for a probe by a competent investigating agency.
The modus operandi was to fabricate prescriptions for expensive
drugs ostensibly for surgery patients. The drugs which were
purchased from the paying counter were later returned on some
premise or the other and reimbursement claimed for the medicines.
When contacted, the Director of Medical Education, Dr. M.S.
Subhadra, said that preliminary inquiry reports were inconclusive
regarding the existence of an organised racket at the Medical
College.
