Militants blow up goods train, snap rail links

By Our Special Correspondent

GUWAHATI, JULY 30. Railway connection between Assam and the rest of the country was snapped as suspected NDFB militants blew up a goods train between Ghograpar and Rangiya railway staions in Nalbari district, about 50 kms from here, around 5 a.m. this morning.

Police and railway sources said twelve wagons were derailed due to the powerful explosion which created a crater 10m in diameter and 5m in depth. The engine of the train was also damaged. However, there was no casualty.

The Kanchanjunga Expres and the Avadh-Assam Express were scheduled to pass through this stretch shortly afterwards. Later, the army and the police found and defused a number of bombs which had been planted along the track.
