Krishna recalls his 'formative years'

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JULY 30. When the alumni of the Mysore Mahajana High School met here on Sunday morning, not surprisingly, it was their most illustrious schoolmate who held everyone's attention. That student happened to be the Chief Minister, Mr. S.M.Krishna.

The first anniversary of the Bangalore branch of the Mahajana Education Society (MES) also saw Mr. Krishna and his contemporaries honour three of their old teachers -- Mr. R.S.Raghavachar, Mr. T.S.Sudarshanachar and Mr. G.B.Subba Rao.

Mr. Krishna inaugurated the event and said he had spent his "formative years" first at the Ramakrishna Ashram and later at the Mahajana High School. "These two institutions gave me the mental and physical training to go forward in life," he said.

He pointed out that the school was set up when private educational institutions were not encouraged. But the founders of the Mahajana High School had fought a big struggle to achieve their end.

The Chief Minister believed that the school from which he passed out in 1948, had helped him to become aware of his country's cultural heritage, while the Ramakrishna Ashram had taught him the principles of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. "What I am today is because of these two institutions," he informed a packed gathering of old students.

Over 233 old students attended the function and honoured their teachers. While Mr. Raghavachar used to teach Kannada, Mr. Sudarshanachar taught Arts and Mr. Subba Rao taught English and Social Studies.
