BCCI unlikely to select team for Toronto
MUMBAI, AUG. 6. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)
is unlikely to convene the meeting of national selectors to pick
the team for the five match limited over series against Pakistan
for the Sahara Cup until it gets the green signal to travel to
Toronto from the Union Government. The Sahara Cup is scheduled
from September 9 to 17.
The five selectors, Messrs. Chandu Borde (Chairman, West),
Thirumalai Sekhar (South), Madan Lal (North), Ashok Malhotra
(East) and Anil Deshpande (Central) were scheduled to pick the
15-member team on April 10, but according to sources in the
Board, the selection for the Sahara Cup has been put off until
the government clears the tour.
India did not play Pakistan at Toronto last September; instead
the Sourav Ganguly led Indians played the West Indies for the DCM
Trophy and won it 2-1.
For the first time, six one-day internationals were played at
Toronto in 1999, with West Indies figuring in all six - three
each against India and Pakistan.
The Event Manager, International Management Group (IMG) and the
sponsor, Sahara, made an announcement recently about the
resumption of India-Pakistan series in Toronto, but developments
in Jammu & Kashmir afterwards has done just enough to raise
doubts about the event taking place.
