ADMIRERS OF comic heroines can now look forward to a treat of American films in which the protagonists are women with razor- sharp wit.

The U.S. Consulate Office of Public Affairs and the Federation of Film Societies of India Southern Region will jointly present a film festival, "Character Women: Comic Heroines in American Films" from August 8 to August 19, at the American Centre auditorium, Gemini, Chennai. Tamil filmstar R. Radhika will inaugurate the festival on August 7.

"I Remember Mama" (1948), "Driving Miss Daisy" (1989), "Mame" (1974), "Rambling Rose" (1991), "Private Benjamin" (1980), "Sister Act" (1992), "Pretty Woman" (1990) and "Pocahontas" (1995) will be screened.

There will be two shows daily on weekdays at 3-00 p.m. and 6-00 p.m. except on August 15. The shows will be held at 10-00 a.m., 1-00 p.m., 3-15 p.m. and 6-00 p.m. on August 12. On August 19, there will be shows at 10-00 a.m., 1-00 p.m., 3-00 p.m. and 5-30 p.m.

"Mame" features the late Lucille Ball, in whose memory a commemmorative stamp was recently released in the U.S. Her television programmes were very popular in India too.
