Police firing claims two lives

AHMEDABAD, AUG 6. Two tribals were killed in police firing in Lambadia village of Sabarkantha district of Gujarat yesterday, taking the toll in recent arson in the State to seven, even as the situation was returning to normal since last night, barring a few stray incidents in Limbayat town of Surat.

Confirming the deaths, police today said that to control a mob indulged in looting and arson in Lambadia, police opened fire, resulting in the deaths. Three SRP jawans were injured in stone- pelting, the police said adding that curfew imposed on Friday night had been continued in the area. Senior police officers were campaigning at the village and an additional SRP force had been sent to meet any eventuality, it added.

In Limbayat, police lobbed 92 teargas shells to disperse a mob indulging in looting and stone-pelting in Navsari Bazar and Golvad localities, after two constables were injured. Three incidents of arson were also reported from the outskirts of Limbayat, where a Bajrang Dal activist was injured after being stabbed by some miscreants, police said. Two former BJP councillors were arrested in Chowk Bazar for ``instigating'' the people and carrying lethal weapons, police said adding that both were later released on bail.

The neighbouring Khedbrahma town, another badly- affected area, was peaceful today and curfew was relaxed during the day. Curfew was relaxed from 8 am to 10 pm at Athwa, Chowk Bazar, Mahidharpura and Katargam areas while in Limbayat it has been relaxed in phases from 8 am to 12 noon and 4 pm to 9 pm.
