Pilot trains to foil militant attacks

JAMMU, AUG. 6. The Northern Railways have introduced pilot security trains to guard against possible militant attacks on passenger trains on the sensitive Jammu-Samba-Pathankot route in the Jammu region. ``We have introduced from August 1 pilot security trains/engines and goods trains which run ahead of passenger trains from Jammu station to Pathankot via Samba to foil attempts by militants,'' the Divisional Traffic Manager, Northern Railways, Jammu, Mr. P.C. Bhardwaj, said today.

The move follows recovery of a large quantity of explosives and weapons from Samba, close to the route of the trains carrying Amarnath pilgrims. Passenger trains on the route, particularly on the Samba belt close to the international border, have come under militant attack 18 times in the past five years, in which 32 people were killed and over 150 injured. Security has been intensified with day and night patrolling by the Railway Protection Force, Railways Police and other para-military forces, he said.
