NEW DELHI, AUG. 22. The Prime Minister, Mr. A. B. Vajpayee, today
expressed deep sorrow at the death of Mrs. Nirmala Gandhi,
daughter-in-law of Mahatma Gandhi in Wardha on Monday. In his
message, the Prime Minister remembered her for the contribution
to the area of social service. She was dedicated to the cause of
poor and needy all her life, the Prime Minister said.
Mrs. Nirmala Gandhi, 91, was the last surviving member of the
Gandhi family of her generation.
Born in Porbunder, she joined the family under Kasturba and
stayed at Rudraya Kunj at Sabarmati Ashram from the age of 11.
She married Ramdas, Mahatma Gandhi's third son, at the age of 20,
an Ashram spokesman said. She shifted to Sevagram with her
husband and continued to work for the upliftment of the poor and
other backward people.
