Gopal Gandhi presents credentials

COLOMBO, AUG. 23. Mr. Gopalkrishna Gandhi, India's new High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, presented credentials to the President, Ms. Chandrika Kumaratunga, today.

After the accreditation ceremony, Ms. Kumaratunga and Mr. Gandhi discussed matters relating to bilateral ties and regional affairs, official sources said.

The Foreign Minister, Mr. Lakshman Kadirgamar, was also present.

Mr. Gandhi, 55, succeeds Mr. Shiv Shankar Menon, who left earlier this month for Beijing as the Ambassador to China.

The former Indian Administrative Service officer is no stranger to Sri Lanka being posted as the first secretary to the Assistant High Commissioner in Kandy between 1978 and 1981.

Before arriving here last week, he was the secretary to the President, Mr. K. R. Narayanan.
