Retail e-business poised for big growth: Cris Infac
By Our Corporate Reporter
CHENNAI, AUG. 23. Cris Infac of CRISIL has released a report on
the retail e-commerce market in India which details the current
level of penetration and usage of on-line retailing in the
country. Based on a survey of Internet users in the four metro
cities in India, the report finds that 84 per cent of Indian
Internet users are aware of e-commerce and 11 per cent have made
at least one purchase on the Internet. The total e-commerce
revenue clocked in 1999-2000 was Rs. 10.60 crores and is expected
to grow to Rs. 421 crores by 2004-05.
The report forecasts what is likely to sell best on the Net. For
instance, it expects books, music and ticketing will be major
markets; while those for groceries, apparel, jewellery and toys
will be restricted. An efficient payment mechanism and delivery
infrastructure will be one of the key factors for online
retailers. The report includes case studies of major players in
the online retail business.
The study, based on a survey of around 500 Internet users,
provides a demographic profile of the typical Internet user in
India as well his level of awareness, satisfaction and the
popular sites visited. This report will be useful to anyone who
wants to assess the potential the on-line retail market in India.
A 10 per cent discount is available on purchases before September
15. Look up the key findings, methodology and detailed coverage
of the report at www.crisil.com.
