Priest 'assaulted'
AHMEDABAD, AUG. 25. A priest attached to the Church of North
India (CNI) in Surendranagar in Gujarat was allegedly beaten up
by some unidentified persons at a fair last Tuesday, police said.
In a complaint on Thursday, the priest, Mr. Arthur Chimanlal
Rajwadi, alleged that he was ``beaten up and paraded naked'' by
some unidentified persons after he and two other priests had
distributed religious pamphlets at a fair organised in the town
on the occasion of a religious festival on August 22, police said
here today.
Mr. Rajwadi said he was approached by a group of 15 to 20 persons
who allegedly threatened his life and then stripped him naked and
beat him up. They then paraded him on the main road, he alleged.
Police have registered a case.
Meanwhile, the All-India Christian Council has faxed a memorandum
to the President condemning the incident and demanded action
against the culprits and measures for the protection of
minorities in the district.
