TDP flays Cong., Left for 'lopsided priorities'

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, AUG. 25. The Telugu Desam has faulted the Congress and the left parties for their ``lop-sided'' priorities.

At a press conference here on Friday, Mr. R. Chandrasekhara Reddy, party spokesman, and Mr. Gadde Babu Rao, Government Whip, said in the Opposition scheme of things bijli bandh appeared to be more important than the suffering of the people affected by heavy rain and flash floods.

In recognition of the seriousness of the situation, the Assembly, in an extraordinary move, decided to adjourn for two days to enable members return to their constituencies. The Chief Minister undertook an aerial survey of the affected areas and convened an all-party meeting to discuss the situation. The TDP leaders said it was unfortunate that the Congress and the CPI(M) staged a walk-out from the meeting demanding postponement to facilitate bijli bandh. Not content, they criticised the Government for failing to handle the crisis despite prior knowledge of heavy rain.

Mr. Chandrasekhara Reddy said instead of discussing the flood situation and giving their valuable advice, the two parties seemed to derive ``raakshasaanandam (sadistic delight)'' from the bijli bandh. The occasion called for concern and compassion, not politics.

The Congress spared some MLAs from fasting to enable them go to back to their constituencies, but did not feel it worthwhile to stay on and participate in the all-party meeting called by the Government.
