6 prisoners escape from Hassan jail
By Our Staff Correspondent
HASSAN, AUG. 25. Six prisoners - five undertrials and a convict -
escaped from the Hassan District Sub-Jail this morning.
According to the Hassan City Police, Adil Sharief, Srinivas,
Ramesh, Tejaswi, Anappa and Mohan allegedly threatened the
warder, Mr. B. Krishnaiah, when the other prisoners were having
their breakfast and escaped from the front wicket gate. The
Deputy Inspector-General (Prisons), Mr. B. G. Malapure, arrived
here to investigate the incident.
While Sharief had been convicted in a murder case and was
awaiting trial in seven other cases, the rest were undertrials.
Srinivas and Anappa were awaiting trial in murder cases. Ramesh
and Tejaswi were accused of theft and Mohan of rape.
Police have issued a red alert and efforts are on to nab the
prisoners. The Superintendent of Police, Hassan, Mr. M. A.
Saleem, who visited the sub-jail twice, first on receiving
information of the incident and later on orders from the DGP
(Prisons), Mr. Revannasiddaiah, said the photographs of the
prisoners had been sent to all police stations.
Mr. Saleem said it might be difficult to nab them as they were in
plain clothes and not in jail uniform. A close watch was being
kept on all escape routes, including bus and railway stations.
