Many reservoirs record heavy rainfall

CHENNAI, AUG. 25. Many reservoirs located in Coimbatore, Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli districts recorded heavy rainfall on Thursday.

During the 24 hours ending 6 a.m. on Friday, as many as five reservoirs registered heavy rainfall, ranging from 12 cm to 7 cm.

The highest amount of 12 cm was received by Sholayar in Coimbatore district followed by 8 cm each in Perunchani (Kanyakumari) and Papanasam (Tirunelveli), and 7 cm each in Parambikulam (Coimbatore) and Pechiparai (Kanyakumari).

Other areas in these districts that registered substantial rainfall this morning were Valparai (Coimbatore) - 11 cm, Shenkottai (Tirunelveli) - 7 cm, and 6 cm each in Thovalai and Nagercoil, both in Kanniyakumari.

Consequently, all the reservoirs started realising heavy inflows. The maximum quantity of 14,500 cusecs was recorded by Papanasam. The flows to Sholayar were of the order of about 7,500 cusecs; Pechiparai - 4,100 cusecs; Parambikulam - 3,000 cusecs and to Perunchani - around 1,700 cusecs.

Among other reservoirs with significant inflows (mentioned in brackets) were Amaravathi in Coimbatore district (8,000 cusecs), Bhavanisagar in Erode (7,000 cusecs), Manimuthar in Tirunelveli (3,700 cusecs) and Aliyar in Coimbatore (3,560 cusecs).

However, the storage at the Mettur reservoir in Salem district remained around 20 tmc ft against the capacity of 93.4 tmc ft. The reservoir registered an inflow of about 4,000 cusecs.

The Mullaperiyar dam in Kerala, the source of water for farming operations in Madurai district, registered 9 cm of rainfall. This morning, it received an inflow of a little more than 11,600 cusecs.
