By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, AUG. 25. One more substation was added to the city today, in an attempt to improve the quality of electricity supply. As many as 80,000 consumers in Nandanam, T.Nagar and Saidapet will benefit from the improved ``voltage profile'' due to the new substation.

The Rs. 15-crore, 110/33 KV Nandanam substation, with an installed capacity of two 25 MVA power transformers, is the fifth to be added to the Chennai circle in the past few years. This substation will also take some load off the stretched 20 MVA R.A. Puram 110/33 KV substation.

Another seven will be added in a phased manner to ensure better and uninterrupted power supply to all parts of the city, as part of the Chennai Augmentation and Upgradation Project.

The Nandanam power station is fed by the Mylapore 230/110/KV substation through a double circuit 110 KV UG XLPE cable system. The route length of the cable circuit is 3.9 km. The advanced substation has Gas Insulated switch gear equipment imported from China.

The Electricity Minister, Mr. N. Veerasamy, inaugurated the substation at a function held here today. With the commissioning of many of the proposed projects in Tamil Nadu, the state has wiped out all deficit in power supply, he said. The Chennai Mayor, Mr. M. K. Stalin, pointed out that people of neighbouring areas in Jyothi Colony, Anbu Colony and Boag Road, had to go a long distance to Saidapet to pay their electricity bills. He requested the Electricity Board to start a billing office in the premises of the Nandanam substation itself. Mr. Veerasamy said that the request will be put up for consideration by the Board.

The TNEB Chairman, Mr. R. Poornalingam, said that the Board had spent about Rs. 100 crores in Chennai alone to augment power supply. As much as 600 km of overhead electricity lines were being taken off and underground cables laid in their place, he said.
