Woman assaulted, commits suicide
By Our Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI, AUG. 25. A mother of two who had been criminally
assaulted by a property dealer-cum-dairy owner a few days ago
allegedly attempted to commit suicide by burning herself after
informing her husband about the incident at her house in Uttam
Nagar in West Delhi last evening.
Police said the victim who was admitted to Safdarjang Hospital
with 90 per cent burns, succumbed to her injuries this afternoon.
The victim's husband, Dinesh Mehta, had taken a loan of Rs 10,000
from a property dealer-cum-dairy owner of Nawada village, Krishan
Gehlot, a few weeks ago.
Ever since he gave the loan, Gehlot used the pretext of visiting
the victim's home while her husband used to be away. He kept
making advances to the 26-year-old woman, who spurned them as she
had been happily married and had two children aged one-and-a-half
years and three years.
However, the woman's refusal did not make Gehlot any less
obsessed with her. On the contrary he decided to force himself on
the woman and on August 18 entered her house and assaulted her
criminally.
Ashamed, the woman hid the incident from her husband, and did not
lodge a complaint with the police. It was only last evening that
she informed her husband that she had been wronged by Gehlot.
The police said Dinesh Mehta rebuked his wife for not informing
him earlier. This allegedly annoyed the woman and after serving
dinner to her husband she allegedly doused herself with kerosene
and set herself afire.
The victim was rushed to Safdarjang Hospital where she was
treated for burns. However, she succumbed to her injuries this
afternoon.
The Uttam Nagar police have registered a case of rape, threat to
kill and abetment to suicide against Krishan Gehlot and have
launched a hunt for the man, who is absconding.
