Web designer held for site hijack

NEW DELHI, AUG. 25. A web designer has been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police for ``hijacking'' a site designed by him to extort money from the company for which the site had been designed.

Web designer, Shailender Kumar Aggarwal, had been employed by Apothecaries Sundries Manufacturing Company, located in Kirti Nagar, to design a website for their products. Aggarwal designed and maintained the site from 1997 and had been paid till December this year.

Recently, however, the company found that his services wanting and decided to get a new one. Aggarwal was asked to return the contents of the website, domain name and the file transfer protocol with passwords.

Instead, Aggarwal changed the ownership details of the domain name to his own by using the file transfer protocol and password which were, obviously, known to him. He also demanded Rs. 1 lakh from the company to return the ownership, file transfer protocol and password.

The company complained to the Crime Branch. After some preliminary enquiries, a case under Sections 406, 384 of the Indian Penal Code and Copy Right sections was registered.

A raid was conducted at Aggarwal's residence at Supreme Enclave in Mayur Vihar, Phase-I, area of East Delhi on Wednesday. On scanning the computer, police recovered database e-mail instructions for the change of ownership details and other correspondence done to hijack the site.

Various documents were found which revealed that Aggarwal was operating under various names and styles. He would change his address often. During interrogation, police said he confessed to having hijacked the site.
