'Speight may be bailed out'
SUVA, SEPT. 3. The Fijian coup leader, Mr. George Speight, and
his top henchmen are due back before a Magistrate on treason
charges tomorrow with legal insiders tipping a possible release
by the end of the day. Legal sources predicted that Chief
Magistrate, Mr. Sailesi Temo, would rule that the treason charges
were an abuse of the legal process, leaving Mr. Speight to face
only minor charges for which he could be freed on bail. Mr.
Speight, was arrested on July 27, and 16 others are being held on
remand on the makeshift prison island Nukulau, east of here.
