BJP for tie-up with UDF, LDF rebels
By Roy Mathew
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 3. The Bharatiya Janata Party is
looking for tie-up with UDF and LDF rebels wherever it has a
chance for victory in the coming local bodies elections. A clear
picture of such alliances would emerge only after the last date
for withdrawal of nominations on September 4.
The party is fielding some 7,000 to 8,000 candidates out of the
total of over 12,000 seats and most of them are party members.
This suggests that there had not been much effort for Beypore-
model seat adjustments. Alliances would be mostly with rebels
from the two main fronts in the State.
In addition to the BJP candidates, the National Democratic
Alliance will be fielding candidates, mostly in the southern
districts.
The BJP general secretary, Mr. P.P. Mukundan, said the party had
taken care to field candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes
and Tribes and minorities besides women. It did not face much
difficulty in finding suitable candidates for reserved seats. The
BJP would be fielding the largest number of candidates in the
State.
The party would be basing the positive side of its campaign on
the need for a development-oriented politics based on self-
reliance in the State. Mr. Mukundan said the BJP would have
favoured fielding of candidates without party label if other
parties agreed on it. The economic and other problems needed to
be addressed together in this respect, he said.
BJP leaders are meeting here soon to finalise the party's
strategies and the campaign programme. The party will be
highlighting the corruption in administration, especially at the
ministerial level. The Plus Two issue and starvation deaths would
be among the other issues. The campaign would also focus on
increase in crimes, especially atrocities against women.
The party would draw the attention of the people to the
financial position of the State. It would tell the people that
the State Government had diverted and failed to spend money
allocated by the Centre for flood relief and tribal development.
