Road mishap sparks violence
By Our Special Correspondent
AHMEDABAD, SEPT. 15. The police burst 37 teargas shells to
disperse an agitated mob throwing stones at the police after a
five-year-old girl was crushed to death by a police jeep in
Jamalpur in the heart of the city this morning.
A constable was driving the jeep when the girl, Amrin Hanif,
standing near her slum quarter, was run over. A large number of
people gathered at the spot. The lone driver was dragged out of
the jeep and was severely beaten up.
Soon more policemen reached the spot and the agitated crowd
indulged in throwing stones at them forcing the police to burst
teargas shells. The situation was later brought under control
after the Gujarat Minister of State for Home, Mr. Haren Pandya,
assured the crowd of necessary action against the constable
involved in the accident. A case of negligent driving had been
registered against the constable.
