Typhoon stalls Navy's goodwill visit

SHANGHAI, SEPT. 15. The Indian Navy has postponed a goodwill visit by its two ships to China, the first since 1995, due to typhoon ``Saomai,'' sources said here today.

``The Indian naval ships may now arrive here on September 17 or 18 depending on the weather conditions,'' sources told PTI.

Two indigenously built warships, INS Delhi, a destroyer and INS Kora, a corvette from the Eajteran Navy fleet, was originally scheduled to arrive here on a goodwill visit from today till September 18. It would be the third goodwill visit by Indian warships to China. The first took place in 1956 and the second in 1995.

Though typhoon Saomai's intensity has reduced, Shanghai city continues to be lashed by heavy rains and high velocity winds. Winds were reported to have reached force 7-9 in the city centre and force 9-11 at the mouth of the Yangtze river.
