Visvesvaraya award planned for engineers
By Our Staff Reporter
BANGALORE, SEPT. 15. The Minister for Major and Medium
Irrigation, Mr. H. K. Patil, has said that the State Government
will institute the Sir M. Visvesvaraya award for engineers this
year.
``A selection committee has already been formed to draw up a list
of those eligible,'' Mr. Patil said at the Engineers' Day
function organised to commemorate the late visionary's 140th
birth anniversary here on Friday.
Later, the PWD Minister, Mr. Dharam Singh, reacted to retired
chief engineers' and former irrigation secretaries' demand for
less political interference in their jobs. ``This is not the
forum to reply to your demands. Besides, the Government will soon
initiate a discussion with engineers as per the recommendations
of the task force,'' he said.
The minister believed that bureaucratic attitude had to change,
``... not just that of the Government''.
Several former chief engineers and irrigation/PWD secretaries
were honoured on the occasion.
The Ministers of State for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj,
and Minor Irrigation, Mr. M. Divakar Babu, and Mr. Kumar
Bangarappa, respectively, also spoke at the function.
