Godown manager, 2 others commit suicide

By Our Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA, SEPT. 20. A couple and their 9-year-old son committed suicide after their footwear godown was gutted here today.

Praveen Matthew Jacob, 35, was the manager of Paragon Footwear godown in Bhavanipuram. The godown reportedly caught fire in the early hours. The cause of the fire was reported to be electrical short-circuit. Fire Services personnel battled for several hours to bring the fire under control, but failed to put it off completely. Fearing that the walls of the godown would collapse on the adjoining buildings, an excavator was used to topple the walls inwards.

Mr. Praveen filed a complaint with the police and even called the proprietor of the firm in Kerala in the morning. He made a statement for a television channel to say that goods worth Rs. 60 lakhs were destroyed in the fire.

In the afternoon he told his friends that he would go home to freshen up and come back. When he did not come out for a long time they went inside to find Mr. Praveen and his wife, Shayjee Praveen, 30, and son Jacob Praveen, 9, lying unconscious with froth coming out of their mouths and noses. An empty soft drink bottle in which they mixed the poison(pesticide in powder form) was also found. His friends rushed them to a private hospital where they were declared dead.

Mr. Praveen reportedly left a note stating that their bodies be buried near the grave of their eldest son, who died on same day last year. The note said that the second son was wearing the clothes of the dead brother and that nobody was responsible for their death.
